Meet Terry

Terry Scott is a newcomer to politics running for State Representative of Tennessee’s 42nd district.  He hopes to represent the citizens of Putnam County with integrity, respect and compassion. Terry was born in Cumberland County KY in a house that his father built, delivered by a physician that made house calls.  From that humble beginning, he has gone on to serve his country and his community with honor and integrity.

Home and family bring joy and happiness to each of us. Terry and his wife, Deidre, have been happily married for 35 years. They have raised 2 children, James and Jillian. James, also a TN Tech graduate, and his wife Liz, live in Cookeville with their 2 children Madelyn and Theodore. Jillian currently resides in Chattanooga completing a residency in General Surgery at Erlanger Medical Center.

After returning to Tennessee, his strong sense of service to his country and community lead him to a career in teaching. Terry earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education and master’s degree in instructional leadership from Tennessee Tech. He then went on to teach math at Celina High School, Cookeville High School, and Upperman High School.  He also coached several sports teams during his tenure as a teacher.

Terry served in the US Navy for over 9 years in the submarine service, stationed on 2 fast attack submarines – the USS Los Angeles and the USS City of Corpus Christi. After coming home to Tennessee to raise his family, Terry continued his military service in the Army National Guard. His distinguished 30 years in the Guard includes a deployment to Iraq and the honor of serving as the Senior Enlisted Leader for the TN National Guard from 2013-2017.

Healthcare

Healthcare

All Tennesseans deserve access to affordable health care.  I will support the expansion of Medicaid to help save our rural hospitals.  Affordable, available health care is our best weapon in successfully combating the opioid crisis in our state.  It is also time to legalize the use of medical marijuana.

Infrastructure / Rural Development

Infrastructure / Rural Development

We must maintain and improve our infrastructure.  In addition to maintaining roads, we must expand the availability of broadband internet to our rural areas.

Jobs

Jobs

Closely related to education is a well-trained workforce.  We should continue the Drive to 55 and TN Reconnect programs. This will, in turn, attract more jobs with higher salaries giving Tennessee an economy built to last. The need to recruit companies with a track record of being good citizens cannot be overlooked, we need corporate partners.  Small startup business as well as family farms must be fully supported and encouraged to grow.

Education

Education

Every Tennessean benefits from making strong public education a priority.  To achieve that we must fully fund the Basic Education Program (BEP) for our school districts across the state.  We need to improve teacher salaries attracting the best and brightest to the profession.  Advanced Placement classes and access to Dual Enrollment opportunities through our community colleges, colleges of applied technology (TCATs), and our state universities, should be available and affordable.  Instead of a focus on state testing for accountability, we need to focus testing for learning such as improving ACT scores, which can demonstrate that our students are college and career ready.
